Imran Khan Seeks Oxford Chancellor Role from Prison: A Bold Move

Imran Khan, the former prime minister of Pakistan, is making headlines with an unusual move. While currently imprisoned in Rawalpindi’s Adiala prison, he has decided to apply for the position of Chancellor at Oxford University.

Khan is now competing for a prestigious role once held by Chris Patten. Sayed Zulfiqar Bukhari from Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, announced his candidacy on August 18. This announcement has surprised and puzzled many people.

How is the Chancellor elected?

The position of Chancellor at Oxford University is a prestigious one. The Chancellor is usually elected by a committee that includes university members and other notable figures.

Mr Khan, who was removed from office in 2022 after a parliamentary vote of no confidence, is now in prison. His imprisonment came after he threatened the military, accusing them of causing his removal by encouraging widespread protests. Khan faces a tough situation with many legal battles ahead. Whenever he wins in court, new charges are quickly brought against him.

Despite all challenges, Khan remains very popular. His strong support from the public continues to be a significant challenge for the current Sharif government and the military. Even though his party faced many obstacles in the February elections, Khan’s candidates still performed well, showing that he still has strong public backing.

Imran Khan, who is already an honorary fellow of Keble College at Oxford, is known for his past as a cricket star and his role in Pakistani politics. He studied at Oxford in the 1970s and has ties to the university through his family. His sons reside in London with their mother, Jemima Goldsmith, the daughter of wealthy financier James Goldsmith.
